Changing my name would make it difficult for the others to find me. But on the other hand, changing it would make it difficult for the Jamie doppelganger to find me as well. I felt a bit torn on what to do. I wanted back in, and I knew no matter what, there would be twelve hours before I would be allowed to continue.

I actually groaned aloud when I realized the original twenty-four-hour moratorium coincided with the twenty-four-hour limit a Guild or Company had to bring in a replacement. It guaranteed if the now dead player returned, they wouldn’t immediately rejoin the same Guild or Company. Yes, they could join after they leveled back up, but it would be up to the members of their former Guild or Company to bring them back in.

But a game where winning depended on working as a group, it seemed to me that Guilds and Companies would want as many people as possible.

Again, my thoughts meandered back to what to do. Contact Alana and ZuZu? Logically, Assassin Arikamei found me because of my name. Reen is my private character name. But then I thought about this character Arikamei. That was a name and a face I’d never seen before. Having more than one private character wasn’t unusual. It’s just that most people who played in The Park kept the same one because they could take that character into any game or Node. And since stats normally transferred, a secondary private account seemed redundant.

So if this was Jamie, he’d already known the stats wouldn’t transfer, and he’d made a new character no one knew about, or he’d had this character for a while. I was willing to bet the later was true because he didn’t play that Assassin as if he were just learning it at level 16. He played it like he knew it.

But he always played the rogue type characters. How could he have received that class as a choice—

I sighed as the answer dawned on me. It made sense. If Arikamei was actually the real Jamie, BossM@N was his practice character. He already knew how to play Ninja and Assassin characters because that’s all he ever excelled in when playing with us. But the Arikamei character—I was willing to bet that character had played everything except the Assassin Class. So when he entered the game that was the Class he had access to.

I was surprised how easy it was for me to put things together now. Hindsight is clarity, isn’t it? That and knowing this was all some evil plot to keep a creator of The Park a prisoner.

Man that sounded like a bad B movie.

The only thing I needed to concentrate on now was getting in and winning the game. If I came across Arikamei again, I would kill him. It was that simple. Wondering and whining about why he bragged about killing me and Shelly having to die was just going to distract me.

I stared at the prompt to change my name and decided I had to.
